The Experience

The Colorado Plateau

Towering mesas, labyrinthine canyon systems, ancient petroglyphs, and a silence that resets something deep. This isn't a tram-window version of Canyonlands — it's the real thing, on foot, carrying what you need, sleeping where few ever sleep.

Your Clapper Adventures guide builds the itinerary around your group's pace, interest, and fitness. Whether you're chasing archaeology, photography, or simply the feeling of being truly off the beaten track — this trip delivers.

Day by Day

What three days in
canyon country looks like

Every group gets a custom route. The outline below is a representative 3-day structure — your guide will shape the exact itinerary based on your pace, interests, and current conditions before your trip.

Meet your guide in Moab for a gear check, route briefing, and permit confirmation. Then it's time to leave the pavement behind. The first day eases you in — big views come fast, and your guide will point out the geological layers, flora, and first signs of ancestral Puebloan presence along the way. Camp at a private desert site with the canyon to yourselves.

Meet your guide in Moab; gear check and route briefing
Trailhead departure into the greater Canyonlands backcountry
First canyon overlooks and mesa rim walking
Arrive at a private, permitted desert campsite
Sunset over the canyon walls; first desert night under the stars

The heart of the trip. Your guide leads you into terrain that most visitors will never see — a different canyon system from Day 1, ancient granaries, petroglyph panels, and natural arch formations far from any maintained trail. Lunch in the shade of a canyon wall. A new campsite, a new vantage point, and another sky full of stars that remind you how big this place really is.

Early start to maximize cool morning hours
Hidden archaeological sites — granaries, petroglyph panels
Off-trail route-finding with your expert guide
Natural arch formations inaccessible without local knowledge
New private campsite; guide-led desert astronomy after dark

The final morning is unhurried. Coffee at camp, last views, one more ridge line if you want it. Then the trail out — which, like all good departures, has its own magic. You'll arrive back at the trailhead with full legs, a quieter mind, and enough stories for a long time to come. Return to Moab mid-afternoon.

Unhurried morning camp; optional sunrise hike
Final canyon views on the trail out
Flexible pacing to match group energy
Return to Moab trailhead by mid-afternoon

Difficulty Rating
Moderate to Strenuous
EasyModerateStrenuous

Expect 6–10 miles of hiking per day on uneven desert terrain, often off-trail, with a loaded pack (25–35 lbs). Some days include significant elevation gain and route-finding on slickrock and sand. You don't need mountaineering experience — but consistent aerobic fitness and comfort on rough ground makes a real difference.

Best Times to Go
Spring (Mar–May) — Ideal. Wildflowers, mild temps, exceptional light. Book early.
Fall (Sep–Nov) — Equally ideal. Cooler nights, golden canyon light. Popular — reserve ahead.
Summer (Jun–Aug) — Possible with very early starts and heat management. Requires planning.
Winter (Dec–Feb) — Lower elevations can be stunning; cold nights require proper gear. Inquire.

Common Questions

Questions before
you commit?

We hear these a lot. Still not covered? Give us a call — we love talking about these trips.

Call 435.260.7066
You should be comfortable walking 6–10 miles per day on uneven, off-trail desert terrain with a loaded pack (25–35 lbs). You don't need to be a marathon runner — but regular hiking, walking, or cardio in the months before your trip makes a real difference. Tell us about your fitness level when you inquire and we'll be straightforward with you.
You'll need a quality backpack, a 3-season sleeping bag rated to at least 20°F, a sleeping pad, sturdy trail boots (broken in), layering clothing for cold nights and hot days, and sun protection. A complete gear list is provided when you book. Don't have everything? We can point you to Moab's excellent gear shops.
Yes — completely. This is your group and your guide(s), no one else. We don't add strangers to fill trip spots. The route, pace, and focus are tailored to your crew.
Spring (March–May) and Fall (September–November) are the sweet spots — mild temperatures, spectacular light, and the most comfortable nights. Summer requires early starts and smart hydration but is absolutely doable. Winter trips are available in lower elevations during dry stretches; cold nights require proper gear. Ask us what's currently looking good.
Desert weather can be unpredictable. Your guide monitors conditions closely and will communicate any route adjustments before departure. Flash flood risk in canyon bottoms is taken seriously — routes are chosen with safety in mind and we never downplay the desert's real conditions. In rare cases of dangerous weather, we work with you to reschedule.
It depends on the child's fitness, maturity, and experience. We've had capable young hikers absolutely thrive on routes tailored to their pace. Contact us directly — we'll have an honest conversation about whether a custom version of this trip makes sense for your family.
Spring and fall dates fill quickly — we recommend booking 3–6 months out for peak season. Backcountry permits in popular Canyonlands areas can require significant lead time. The sooner you reach out, the more route options we have for you.
