About This Adventure

More than a hike —
a meaningful day.

Bears Ears National Monument is one of the most significant and least-crowded landscapes in the American Southwest. Ancient cliff dwellings, rock art panels, soaring mesas, and quiet canyon floors — this is a place that rewards slow travel with the right guide.

Your Clapper Adventures guide will tailor the day entirely to your group — your pace, your interests, and your energy. Whether you're drawn to the archaeology of Ancestral Puebloan culture, the quiet drama of slot canyon light, or simply a long, deep walk in wild country, we'll find the route that fits.

🏔️

Tailored to Your Group

No two days look the same. Trail selection, pace, and focus are all shaped around your crew — beginners, history buffs, and experienced hikers equally welcome.

🏺

Deep Cultural Context

Your guide brings the landscape to life — reading rock art, explaining ancient architecture, and sharing the geology and ecology that shaped this extraordinary corner of Utah.

🌿

Leave It Better

Bears Ears is a living cultural landscape. We hike with care, stay on trail, and leave every site exactly as we found it — so others can have this experience for generations.

Three routes, one perfect day.

Your guide will recommend the best route based on your group's interests, fitness, and the conditions of the day. All three offer something genuinely unforgettable.

01

House on Fire

Mule Canyon · Most Popular

A spectacular Ancestral Puebloan granary tucked into a shallow alcove where morning light catches the red sandstone above and makes the ruins appear to be on fire. One of the most photogenic sites in the Bears Ears region.

Best in morning light (early start recommended)
Accessible route — suitable for most fitness levels
Striking red rock formations and canyon walls
Combines well with broader Mule Canyon ruins
02

Mule Canyon

Ruins · History · Culture

A fuller exploration of Mule Canyon's remarkable collection of ruins and ancient artifacts, revealing centuries-old stories of the people who lived and farmed this landscape. Your guide puts history in your hands.

Multiple ruin sites in a single drainage
Rich storytelling from your local guide
Artifacts and architecture dating back hundreds of years
Ideal for history and culture enthusiasts
03

Grand Gulch

Backcountry · Rock Art · Rugged

For those who want real solitude and raw canyon country — Grand Gulch delivers. Well-preserved rock art panels, dramatic cliff dwellings, and the kind of silence that's increasingly hard to find. More rugged terrain, deeper rewards.

Secluded, dramatic canyon scenery
Exceptional rock art and cliff dwelling preservation
Suits those seeking a more adventurous, off-beaten-path day
Best for small groups comfortable with uneven terrain
How Your Day Unfolds

What to expect on the trail.

🌅

Early Morning Start

We meet at your designated departure point and head south toward Cedar Mesa. Early starts are ideal — the light is extraordinary and the canyon is yours alone.

🗺️

Route Briefing & Intention Setting

Your guide walks you through the day's route, safety considerations, and what to look for. We're out here to connect with this place — the guide makes that happen.

🏛️

Immersive Canyon Exploration

This isn't a march from A to B. We pause at ruins, read rock art, discuss geology, eat snacks at good overlooks, and take the time the landscape deserves.

🌄

Return & Debrief

We make our way back with energy in reserve. Your guide will answer every question you've been saving up, point out any sights you might have missed, and send you off with good recommendations.

💰

Guide Gratuities

Not required, but always appreciated. If your guide made the day — and we think they will — it's the best way to say so. Cash or card are both welcome.

Gear Up Right

What to bring on the trail.

Bears Ears is remote desert canyon country. Come prepared and you'll thrive. We've kept this list honest — nothing superfluous, nothing forgotten.

Sturdy, closed-toe shoes — trail runners or hiking boots. No sandals or flip-flops on canyon terrain.
Water bottles or hydration bladder (at least 2L) — desert hiking burns through water fast. More is better.
Small daypack — for water, snacks, layers, and personal items. Your guide carries the essentials.
Sun hat and sunglasses — desert sun at elevation is relentless. Wide-brimmed is best.
Rain coat / wind layer — canyon weather can shift quickly in spring and fall. A light shell stows easily and you'll be glad to have it.
Light insulating layer — mornings on Cedar Mesa can be cool, particularly in shoulder season.
Sunscreen and lip balm — high-SPF, applied before you start and again mid-day.
Camera — you will want one. Phones are fine; bring a charged battery pack.
Hiking poles (optional) — handy on uneven terrain and loose sand, especially for longer days.
Your favorite snacks — lunch, trail mix, whatever fuels you. There are no resupply options on Cedar Mesa.
A note from your guide.

Bears Ears is unlike anywhere else on the Colorado Plateau. The trails are quiet, the ruins are irreplaceable, and the landscape rewards patience. Come curious and come comfortable — the day will take care of itself.

If you're hiking in summer, we'll plan an early start to beat the heat. Spring and fall are prime season — mild temps and extraordinary light. Winter days are crisp and crowd-free.

Have questions about what to wear or bring for your specific trip date? Just ask when you book — we'll give you tailored advice for the conditions you'll be hiking in.

Although not required, guide gratuities are customary and always appreciated. If your guide gave you a great day out there, they'll remember it — and so will you.
