Seven days.
Aspen's finest
wild places.
A fully private week in Colorado's most spectacular mountain terrain — Maroon Bells, the Elk Range, Conundrum Hot Springs, and beyond. Expert-guided, entirely tailored to your group.
Not a group tour.
Your Aspen.
Most guided hikes in Aspen put you with strangers and send you down the same trail everyone else walked yesterday. We don't do that. Every day of this 7-day trip is built around your crew — your pace, your curiosity, and the places that actually move you.
Private by Design
Your party, only. No strangers. Low guide-to-guest ratios mean more time in the field, more real coaching, and a schedule that bends to you — not the other way around.
Local Expertise, Aspen-Deep
We know which trail holds snow late into July, which ridge has the best wildflower bloom, and which summit view stops everyone cold. That knowledge is what seven days of real guiding looks like.
Skills You'll Keep
Navigation, route-reading, altitude acclimatization, wildlife awareness — our guides teach while they lead. You'll leave more capable than when you arrived.
Day by day
in the mountains.
This itinerary is a starting framework — not a fixed script. Your guide adjusts for weather, wildfire conditions, your group's energy, and real-time opportunities on the trail. Think of it as a well-informed plan, not a rigid schedule.
Meet your guide at your Aspen accommodation for a trip briefing, gear check, and altitude primer. We kick things off with a mellow hike on Smuggler Mountain or the Ute Trail — just enough to feel the elevation (7,908 ft) without overdoing it on day one. Dinner together to set the tone for the week.
The Maroon Bells are the most photographed mountains in Colorado — and with good reason. We beat the crowds with an early bus and hike Crater Lake Trail with extensions into Maroon Snowmass Wilderness. Your guide shares the geology, ecology, and history that most visitors drive past and never hear.
We access one of the premier high-alpine hiking routes in the Lower 48 — the Four Pass Loop — and traverse a full ridgeline segment with views of the Maroon Bells from the opposite side. Above treeline most of the day. This is why you came.
A Clapper signature day. We pack in to Conundrum Hot Springs (11,200 ft) — a high-alpine geothermal pool surrounded by 14ers. The trail gains 2,600 ft over 8.5 miles and your guide handles logistics, gear recommendations, and permit coordination. Fall asleep under Colorado stars at a camp that earns its view.
After hiking out from Conundrum, we recover briefly before driving to the Capitol Creek trailhead. This valley delivers close-range views of Capitol Peak (14,130 ft) — one of Colorado's most technical summits — without requiring technical climbing. Stunning wildflower meadows and elk habitat the whole way in.
Most visitors never leave the Maroon Bells corridor. We do. Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness offers solitude, old-growth aspen groves in fall color, beaver ponds, and ridgeline views without a permit queue in sight. A quieter day before the farewell stretch.
We end where we began — Smuggler Mountain — but with seven days of altitude in your legs and a totally different perspective. A final summit, a debrief with your guide, and recommendations for your next adventure. Trip closes at noon allowing for afternoon departures or an extra night in Aspen.
The places you'll actually go.
Aspen's backcountry is one of the most diverse high-alpine landscapes in North America. Here's a taste of what we'll cover together.
Colorado's most photographed peaks — and your guide knows exactly when the crowds thin out.
Geothermal pools at altitude surrounded by 14ers. One of Colorado's truly earned backcountry rewards.
Golden aspen colonies, elk habitat, and old-growth forest corridors that most visitors never discover.
Everything you need.
Nothing you don't.
A certified, Aspen-experienced guide with you every day. Navigation, safety, natural history, and real-time decision-making are all part of the deal.
Your guide builds each day's plan around your group, weather, and conditions. No pre-printed schedules. Real-time, real-terrain routing.
Conundrum Hot Springs and other protected areas require permits that book out fast. We handle all reservations and coordination in advance.
Before you pack a single thing, we walk you through exactly what to bring — and what to leave home. No over-packing, no critical gaps.
Afternoon thunderstorms are part of Aspen's summer. Your guide tracks conditions and adapts the day accordingly — you stay safe and you still see something great.
For the Conundrum overnight: camp site selection, LNT best practices, and backcountry safety protocols are all managed by your guide.
* Lodging, meals, and personal gear not included. We provide a detailed packing list and Aspen accommodation recommendations on inquiry.
Difficulty &
who it fits.
Rated Moderate to Strenuous overall. Most days fall in the moderate range (6–10 miles, 1,000–2,000 ft gain). Day 4 — the Conundrum overnight — is the hardest push. Your guide sets a pace that keeps everyone moving comfortably.
Don't take our word
for it.
"Our guide knew every inch of the terrain. On day two he took us to a viewpoint above Crater Lake that wasn't on any trail map. That's what private guiding actually means."
"Conundrum Hot Springs at sunset with no one else around. That alone was worth the entire week. Our guide got us there early and positioned us perfectly."
"I've done guided trips in Patagonia and the Dolomites. This ranked right alongside them. The knowledge, the safety management, the flexibility — all excellent."
"We were worried about altitude coming from sea level. Our guide built in a perfect acclimatization ramp and we never felt wrecked. Smart planning made all the difference."
"Brought our executive team for a retreat. By day three the conversations happening on trail were better than anything we'd get in a boardroom. Worth every dollar."
"The Four Pass ridgeline segment was indescribable. Our guide kept pointing out features we never would have noticed — glacial polish, old mining history, alpine flora. So much richer than hiking solo."

Good questions
deserve real answers.
You should be able to comfortably hike 6–8 miles with 1,500 ft of elevation gain without it wrecking you for the next day. If you're regularly active — hiking, cycling, fitness classes — you'll be fine. If you're uncertain, reach out and describe your usual activity level; we'll give you an honest answer.
Aspen sits at 7,908 ft and we regularly hike above 12,000 ft. Altitude affects everyone differently. We structure Day 1 as a deliberate acclimatization day — shorter, lower, slower — to help your body adjust. Arriving a day early in Aspen is always a good idea. Stay well hydrated and avoid alcohol the first night.
You'll need day hiking boots (broken in), layering system for cold mornings and afternoon storms, rain gear, trekking poles (optional but recommended), and a 20–30L daypack. For the Conundrum overnight: sleeping bag, pad, and backcountry tent. We send you a complete, prioritized packing list when you book.
Colorado's afternoon thunderstorms are predictable and manageable with smart scheduling — we aim for alpine summits before noon. Truly dangerous weather means rerouting, not canceling; your guide has deep local knowledge of alternate routes that stay equally rewarding. Severe weather cancellations are handled case by case.
We run private trips for groups of 2–12. Solo travelers are welcome. Larger groups may require a second guide — we'll arrange that during the inquiry process. Every trip is your group only; we don't combine parties from different bookings.
Mid-June through late September is the primary hiking season. July–August offers peak wildflowers and warmest conditions; late September brings Aspen's legendary golden foliage. Snow can linger on high passes into mid-July some years. We'll advise on exact timing based on your interest and the current snowpack.
Lodging is not included. Aspen offers everything from budget-friendly lodges to boutique hotels. We provide accommodation recommendations in Aspen proper — priced honestly across different budgets — when you inquire. The Conundrum overnight includes backcountry camping as part of the trip itinerary.
Pricing varies based on group size, dates, and specific logistics. We don't publish rates because a quote for two people on a weekday in July is genuinely different from a group of eight over Labor Day weekend. Send an inquiry or call us — we respond fast and give you real numbers without the runaround.
